Operation Prosperity Guardian: Safeguarding Red Sea

In response to escalating Houthi militant attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, the United States has spearheaded Operation Prosperity Guardian, a multinational security initiative formed in December 2023. The operation, under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and led by Task Force 153, aims to address the Houthi’s militant attacks on the vessels in the Red Sea.

Operation Prosperity Guardian against Houthi Militant Attacks

The Houthi militants have targeted international vessels in the Red Sea as a response to Israel’s 2023 assault on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. The Houthi leader, Abdul Malik Al Houthi, issued warnings against U.S. intervention, threatening retaliation with drones and missiles. Their attacks are a form of expressing solidarity with the Palestinians and opposing perceived external interference.

Who Are the Houthis?

The Houthi movement is a Shiite militant organization controlling northern Yemen and is supported by Iran. It acts as Iran’s proxy in regional conflicts. Additionally, North Korea has reportedly provided funding and support to the Houthis through Syria, as revealed in a 2018 United Nations document.

Participants of Operation Prosperity Guardian

Over 20 nations, including the United States, have confirmed their participation in Operation Prosperity Guardian. Consultations with additional nations are ongoing.

Some countries may contribute to protecting Red Sea commercial traffic through existing naval agreements rather than joining the U.S.-led operation, contributing to the operational complexity.

Operation Prosperity Guardian – How it works?

This defensive coalition is a global response to reassure the international shipping community.

According to Airforce Major General Pat Ryder, the operation aims to defend against Houthi missile and drone attacks on vessels transiting the Red Sea.

The forces assigned to Operation Prosperity Guardian will patrol the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, responding to and assisting commercial vessels to ensure safe passage.

Significance of the Red Sea

The Red Sea is a vital international waterway through which 10-15% of global shipping passes. Houthi attacks in this area impact global trade, adversely affecting economies worldwide and costing commercial shipping firms billions of dollars.

Operation Prosperity Guardian seeks to mitigate these threats and safeguard the interests of the international community in this critical maritime region.
